What Generation do I currently have?

Gen 1 - There is no Electronic Control Module (ECM), there is a long set of wires attached directly to the wiper and the main beam of the wiper has a "ridge" in the center running the entire length of the wiper

Gen 2 - There is no ECM. There is a long set of wires coming directly out of the top of the wiper and has an aerodynamic 'spoiler' shape running along the edge of the entire length

Gen 3 - There is an ECM and the main wiper frame is similar in appearance to the GEN 2 but there are no long wires coming directly out of the top of the main wiper and instead is a very short (about 2" to 4") set of wires in shrink tubing coming out of the replaceable squeegee and running through an open end 'clamp' to attach the wires to the main wiper frame. There is a connector at the end of the short wires that attaches to a Wire Harness (8 wires) that has a black and gray plug on one end that plugs into the ECM and THERMALBLADE is printed in red on the wiper frame

About Wiper Squeegee Materials

Wiper squeegees are commonly made from natural rubber, synthetic rubber (including polyurethane), and silicone. Each material offers distinct advantages and disadvantages depending on climate, cost, and desired lifespan.

Feature
Natural Rubber
Synthetic Rubber / Polyurethane
Silicone
Durability / LifespanShorter lifespan, typically 6-12 months. Can be engineered for specific durability needs; some last longer than natural rubber.Longest lifespan, often lasting 18-24 months or more.
Performance in Extreme TempsProne to stiffening and cracking in the cold, or softening in the heat.Varies by specific synthetic compound, some resist oils and chemicals well.Maintains flexibility well in both extreme heat and cold.
UV & Ozone ResistanceDegrades quickly with sun exposure.Better than natural rubber, especially polyurethane options.Superior resistance, ideal for sunny climates.
Wiping QualityProvides smooth, streak-free wipes when new; performance degrades over time.Good performance, especially in oil-rich environments.Often quieter and smoother; may leave a temporary film initially, but eventually creates a water-repellent coating on the windshield.
CostLowest initial cost.Mid-range to higher cost depending on formulation.Highest initial cost, but can be more cost-effective long-term.
  • Natural rubber is the classic, most affordable option and widely available, offering good performance in moderate climates but is susceptible to degradation from UV rays and extreme temperatures.
  • Synthetic rubber, particularly polyurethane, is more resistant to chemicals and oils than natural rubber and performs well on specific surfaces or in industrial environments.
  • Silicone is considered a premium choice, offering superior durability, longevity, and resistance to harsh environmental conditions, making it a better value over time despite a higher upfront cost. Some silicone blades also feature advanced coatings, like graphite to reduce friction or ceramic, to enhance durability and performance even further.

All ThermalBlade Heated Squeegees are made of Graphite coated Silicone to provide quite, longterm performance! We also offer Unheated Squeegees in Silicone or the less expensive Rubber.
